The main objective of jiu-jitsu, especially Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), is to enable a weaker or smaller person to defend themselves against a larger and stronger opponent. To achieve this goal, jiu-jitsu focuses on techniques of leverage, control, and submission. This includes a variety of holds, chokes, and immobilizations that allow the opponent to be neutralized without the need for brute force.

In addition to self-defense, jiu-jitsu is also practiced for its contributions to physical and mental health, including physical conditioning, development of discipline and self-control, and as a competitive sport.
