When you arrive at Gracie Barra Davie, you will be welcomed by the staff, who will guide you on a tour  of the school and explain how the classes work. The first jiu-jitsu class typically begins with a light stretching and our Gracie Barra warm up, which encompasses a series of mobility exercises to prepare your body for the practice.

Next, you will learn basic jiu-jitsu techniques, such as falls and fundamental positions. The instructors are patient and detail each movement to ensure you understand and execute it correctly. After learning the techniques, you will practice drills to solidify the learning. This practice is crucial for developing muscle memory and coordination.

Depending if the student has had any Jiu Jitsu experience before, there may be a brief introduction to light sparring. However, in the first few classes, the focus is usually more on technique and less on combat.

How to Prepare for Your First Jiu-Jitsu Class

To make sure you are well-prepared for your first class, it is important to wear comfortable and appropriate clothing for physical activities. If you do not have a gi (kimono), you can wear a t-shirt and workout pants or shorts. For the girls, it’s recommended leggings or biker shorts.

Maintain good personal hygiene, nobody wants to train with a stinky partner, right? Short nails, clean and tied-up hair (if long), and the absence of accessories are essential to avoid injuries. Additionally, be sure to stay well-hydrated before the class and have a light meal about 2 hours before the training to ensure sufficient energy and bring a bottle of water.

Tips for Jiu-Jitsu Beginners

Arrive 15 to 20 minutes prior to the scheduled class, this shows respect for the instructors and your classmates. Inform the instructor of any physical limitations or pre-existing injuries. Pay close attention to the instructors’ demonstrations and , please , do not hesitate to ask questions if something is unclear. Enjoy the learning process.
