If you’re thinking about starting Jiu-Jitsu but aren’t sure what to expect in your first classes, this article is for you. Stepping onto the mats for the first time can feel intimidating, but it actually marks the beginning of an incredible journey of learning, growth, and personal transformation.
At Gracie Barra Davie, we welcome new students every day, and we know that the first step is the most important. That’s why we want to walk you through what to expect as you begin this experience.
You don’t need to be “ready” to start
Many people postpone starting Jiu-Jitsu because they think they need to be in shape, know techniques, or have some level of physical preparation. But the truth is: you just need to be willing to learn.
Our classes are designed for all levels, including complete beginners. Every student progresses at their own pace, with the support of qualified instructors and a welcoming environment.
What to bring to your first class
You don’t need to worry about having a gi for your trial class, we’ll provide one for you at the school.
One important thing: bring flip-flops. They’re essential to maintain hygiene and avoid walking barefoot outside the mat area.
We also recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows movement, such as a t-shirt, leggings, or a light sweatshirt, especially if you’ll be wearing the gi over your clothes. Come with an open mind and get ready to learn and have fun!
What you’ll learn at the beginning
In your first classes, the focus will be on the basics: body movement, breakfalls, control positions, and self-defense principles. You’ll also learn about mat etiquette, how to greet others, respect your training partners, and handle challenges safely and respectfully.
It’s normal to feel a bit lost in your first few classes, but with time, everything starts to click, and progress comes naturally.
So much more than a sport
Jiu-Jitsu goes far beyond technique and physical training. From the very first classes, you begin developing life skills like discipline, focus, self-control, respect, resilience, and confidence.
It improves your body, strengthens your mind, and transforms your habits. Over time, you’ll notice positive changes in your behavior, how you handle stress, and even in your daily routine.
More than just fighting, Jiu-Jitsu teaches you how to grow and that starts from day one.
Take the first step
There’s no perfect time to begin, the best time is now.
Gracie Barra Davie is ready to welcome you with an experienced team, a complete facility, and a safe, friendly environment to start your journey.
We’ll see you on the mats!
